(A) Nobody Goes to the Ball

Not only as a fresher, but as a 23 year old who never had the chance to go to a ball/prom/whatever, I felt it was important I went to the freshers ball.

I didn’t know what to expect really. All I knew was that I had to dress up smart. The fun here is that it would make a change trying to look all fancy. I even treated myself to a new waistcoat – why not?

It felt like a special event because most people were dressed up in nice shirts and dresses (there were a couple of actual ball gowns on display too). In reality, it was just a normal night out in suits and dresses – is that what proms/balls are supposed to be?

I wouldn’t complain. I had fun. I met some beautiful human beings too (you know, the whole inside and outside radiant beauty deal?). I’m thankful for seeing that there are some gems among us. I hate that my interest in them has been piqued – it’s a ball, and the illusion fades when the clock strikes….

Maybe it’s an age thing – but I’d totally do that again. Getting dressed up really smart and going out to some club and just talking to everyone and everyone about everything and nothing.

I’m also pleased to know there are two club rooms for cheesy 80’s and 90’s music within a 10 minute walk from my accommodation. It feels like I brought the only relevant piece of the hometown night life with me.

The Sunshine Blogger Award

This is my second award in my 6 months of blogging, and I’m delighted to thank BeXoxoBlog for the nomination. Without the support of fellow bloggers sharing their support and praise, it’s unlikely we’d have nearly as many fantastic posts to read and appreciate.

The Rules:

  1. Thank the person that nominated you.
  2. Answer the questions from your nominator.
  3. Nominate fellow bloggers you follow.
  4. Give them 10 questions to answer.

1) Are you a coffee drinker or tea drinker?

Coffee, always. I can’t drink tea unless it’s more or less 50% sugar. I can get by on a single spoon in coffee though (dash of milk too, if you were wondering).

2) Where is one place in the world that you want to visit?

Venice, Italy. There’s something that appeals to me about a city on the water. Amsterdam was great, but it felt like the 420 halfway point to the real deal.

3) What is the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?

Probably what I can only describe as ‘doing a Britney’. Just under a year ago I was very unhappy with where I was in life, both personally and in terms of career. In the space of a few weeks, I quit my job, cut off my long hair, broke up with my girlfriend, got a new job and moved to London. From that point, I’ve been trying to make everything an adventure if I can really.

4) What has been your favorite vacation destination and why?

Probably Amsterdam as it’s the only holiday I’ve been on since I was 15. It’s a pretty place with a great night life.

5) Do you believe in love at first sight?

Yes…. Sort of…. I don’t know. I’ll tell you what I do believe for sure:

  • Only fools fall in love.
  • Loving yourself before someone else seems to be common justification to be an asshole.
  • I am both a fool and an asshole.

6) What’s your favorite movie?

That’s tricky – I have a guilty pleasure in Disney movies you see…. If I had to pick one stand out movie, it would have to be Fight Club. Great book, great film, but shhh! Don’t talk about it.

7) Do you collect anything?

I hoard random things, and have a pin board full of gig tickets, wristbands, business cards, key-chains and other bits and pieces. I have a t-shirt for almost every gig/festival I’ve been to, and I collect DVDs as I like having complete sets and being prepared for inevitable WiFi issues time to time.

8) What is something that you are looking forward to at this very moment?

Well, I was looking forward to seeing Billy Joel live at Wembley and starting university, but both of those have just passed so I’m just living in the moment and hoping I meet some cool people that turn out to be long term friends (as opposed to the ‘part time friends’ as one of my new friend/neighbour put it in conversation earlier). There are nerdy things to look forward to like Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Pokemon and The Dark Tower but I try not to think about them in relation to the indefinite waiting game we fans play.

9) Out of your posts, which one is your favorite? Why?

I hate this one! I’m without a doubt my own worst critique and try not to judge my work once I’m satisfied enough to post it. I like my ‘Lyrics Without Music‘ posts ‘Twisted’ and ‘Born Anew’ because they were relieving to write. In terms of writing on a topic, I’d say that either ‘Who Do You Think You Are?‘  Or ‘Heroes, and Writing in the (2nd) Wind’ would be my favourite/best/whatever, purely for being raw, honest and mostly unedited.

10) What is one of your pet peeves?

Unreliable people – I can get over, and easily get along with, people who are bluntly honest about their ability to do something or be somewhere, but have no time for people who lie about what they can do and why they don’t. There are too many of those people around.

I’d like to nominate A Modestly Obnoxious Serb for this award – Not only is she a fascinating writer, but without her support, praise and feedback I probably wouldn’t have continued this far.

Return To The Capital (September 10th)

It doesn’t feel like that long a time since I wrote ‘Flee The Capital’, but 4 months have passed almost to the day.

September 10th is going to be a date I remember. It helps that it’s on a t-shirt, but it marks the day I left for university to start the next stage of my life and the day I saw Billy Joel live. Aside from it being hosted in the legendary Wembley Stadium, it was unlike any other act I’ve ever seen. I felt complete having left. I heard everything I wanted to hear, and am safe in the knowledge that Billy still has his voice and sense of humour.

Show may include Elton John parodies and British anthems – said no warning label.

The date has felt like an ‘end-date’ more than a new beginning, but I suppose there isn’t much between the two. A lot has happened this year, but I think this is like starting over again. Man on a mission style, you know? I’m in a new area, with nobody I know, starting a course that has no definite bearing. I don’t think I would change any of it though. Sink or swim, right?

It did cross my mind that I did this just under a year ago for work, and it drove me crazy. Not all the way round crazy, but enough that some madness stuck and is part of who I am (blegh…). Going into a mad situation mad sounds logical to me. I’m not nervous. I suppose if I had to say I am anything, I guess it would be that I am impatient for things to start happening.

I do have several advantages over the people I’ll be living with. Firstly, I’ve 6 years of living away from home dependent on my own income. Secondly, I don’t have the drinking sensibilities of an 18 year old. On top of this, I appear to be one of the only people in the entire building, so I will meet people as they arrive over the next two days. In saying this, I’m sure there are some disadvantages to be considered – such as the few years age gap and that they will be all coming from similar situations compared to me that will give them instant common ground.

The new digs. Oddly poignant moment to capture on screen for this shot.

Checking the time, it’s almost 6am. I stayed up after the gig to get everything unpacked and get the room feeling like home. With all of the furniture being built-in, I won’t be able to succumb to my usual habit of moving everything every so many months and need to get used to a state of permanence for the next 9 months or so. It’s all finally done. Tomorrow will be food shopping, local reconnaissance and scheduling fresher events. The latter feels weird to be doing without other people I know around. Oh well.

I need some sleep. With this, I’m putting the best foot forward in returning to the blogging community.
